Marianne Cornelius Artist Statement

I have always wanted to be a constant seeker and, as a painter and jewelry artist, love to learn new processes, techniques, materials.
In the late 70ies I have studied the technique of the old masters under the instructions of Prof. Ernst Fuchs, one of the leading figures of the „VIENNIESE SCHOOL OF PHANTESTIQUE REALISM“.
Nature, greek mythology, music, gemstones in all their varity bring inspiration and exploration to my work.
I also enjoy the meditational state of mind that comes when focusing on the construction of a painting, drawing or a piece of jewelry. It is just like working on a living structure. And sometimes it sends me in a new and exciting direction as i have planed to finish it. I love to let go and see, what it becomes, when it leaves my workspace. The technique I use in my jewelry is a weaving technique called SOUMAK. The weaving of wire is a great Symbol for me, how everything is connected and bound together. So the finished piece of jewelry speaks to another person and creates a connection between us. My believe is, that this connection between people is important and results in unity finding more expression in our lives. Handmade art jewelry does exactly that.
